Nature

Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara place Mercury among the planetary cabinet as the prince, and they assign to him speech in Kālapuruṣa. (BJ 2.1 · BPHS 2.4-5 · BPHS 2.2-3) Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī class him as a natural benefic, with the rule that he becomes malefic when joined with malefics. (BJ 2.5 · Sārāvalī 4.9 · SAR 4.9) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī call him neuter and connect him with the earth element. (BJ 2.6 · BPHS 2.9 · Sārāvalī 4.14 · BPHS 2.10) Bṛhat Jātaka gives him the śūdra varṇa, Parāśara gives him vaiśya, and Bṛhat Jātaka gives him rajas among the guṇas. (BJ 2.7 · BPHS 2.11)

The descriptive verses give Mercury a dark green or dūrvā-grass complexion, green colour, and Viṣṇu as his deity. (BJ 2.4 · BPHS 2.6-7 · BJ 2.5 · Sārāvalī 4.12 · BPHS 2.8) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara assign skin as his dhātu, and Bṛhat Jātaka gives him a constitution of all three humours. (BJ 2.11 · BPHS 2.21 · BJ 2.8-11) Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī describe him as clear or coherent in speech, fond of laughter, skilful, and ready to imitate the dress and speech of others. (BJ 2.8-11 · Sārāvalī 4.21-27 · SAR 4.24) Sārāvalī assigns the Atharvaveda to him, and Sūrya Siddhānta gives Wednesday as his day. (Sārāvalī 4.19 · Sūrya Siddhānta 12.78)

The sign scheme gives Mercury his own signs in Mithuna and Kanyā, exaltation in Kanyā at 15°, and debility in Mīna. (BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · Pulippāṇi 6 · Sarvārthacintāmaṇi · p. 42) Parāśara gives Kanyā 15° to 20° as Mercury’s mūlatrikoṇa span. (BPHS 2.49-52) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī give him directional strength in the east, which is the lagna. (BJ 2.19 · BPHS 2.25 · Sārāvalī 4.35) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī state that Mercury is strong by day and night. (BJ 2.21 · BPHS 2.26 · Sārāvalī 4.36) Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī place him fifth in natural strength among the seven grahas. (BJ 2.21 · Sārāvalī 4.40)

Parāśara gives Mercury as significator of astrology, learning, maternal uncles, calculation, bodily movement, dancing, physicians, laughter, crafts, and branches of knowledge. (BPHS 8.43) Bṛhat Jātaka 20.6 gives learning, wealth, dharma, and famous virtues for Mercury’s placement, and the daśā verses add wit, argument, stratagem, and service. (BJ 20.6 · BJ 8.15) Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 20.6 gives friend as his relationship signification, and the core nature verses support trade, writing, and intellect through speech, calculation, and skill. (BPHS 20.6 · BPHS 8.43 · BJ 2.1 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas) The facts in this library also place him in pleasure grounds, assign mixed taste and autumn, and connect him with a season as his span of time. (BJ 2.12 · BPHS 2.22 · Sārāvalī 4.15 · BJ 2.14 · BPHS 2.24 · BPHS 2.35-36 · Sārāvalī 4.17 · BPHS 2.23)

What the texts say of it

For sign placement, Bṛhat Jātaka gives sharp contrasts by dignity and by the sign lord. (BJ 18.8-11) In his own sign, Mercury gives generosity and attachment to one’s line or people. (BJ 18.8-11) In Venus’s signs, Bṛhat Jātaka gives a teaching, domestic increase, and wealth. (BJ 18.8-11) In Mars’s signs, the same chapter gives gambling, debt, drink, theft, falsehood, and poverty. (BJ 18.8-11) The dignity verses set the frame for these results, since Kanyā is exaltation and mūlatrikoṇa, Mithuna and Kanyā are his own signs, and Mīna is debility. (BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.49-52)

For house placement, the concise rule in Bṛhat Jātaka 20.6 gives Mercury a good reading in many houses, with learning, wealth, dharma, and reputation. (BJ 20.6) The public-domain Self Instructor gives Mercury in the 10th as fortunate, intelligent, and productive of good name, in the 11th as wealth-giving with mathematical skill, and in the 12th as intelligent yet unstable in conduct. (Self Instructor 5 · p. 125 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 125 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 125) They are public-domain English summaries drawn from later books. (Self Instructor 5 · p. 125 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 125 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 125) The texts in this library do not give a single chapter here listing Mercury through all twelve houses.

The daśā passages are fuller and more definite. (BJ 8.15 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) Bṛhat Jātaka gives embassies, wealth from friends, teachers, and learned people, praise from scholars, fame, stratagem, goods, gold, land, good fortune, happiness, wit, service, intellect, and success in dharma. (BJ 8.15) The same verse also gives harshness, fatigue, bondage, mental distress, and troubles from the three humours. (BJ 8.15) Phaladīpikā and Parāśara support Mercury daśā as strong for learning, trade, writing, and clever dealing, with weakness showing as nervous strain, skin trouble, and scattered effort. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results)

How it combines

The basic method stated for judgment is classical. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) A graha acts through the houses it rules and the house it occupies, and its result is altered by dignity in sign and by the star lord under which it stands. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) For Mercury this means that house lordship is central, since he owns Mithuna and Kanyā wherever they fall in the nativity. (BJ 1.13 · Pulippāṇi 6) Jātakacandrikā gives a clear example of functional change, calling Mercury bad for Vṛścika lagna because he owns the 8th and 11th, and good for Makara lagna because he owns auspicious houses there. (Jātakacandrikā · p. 63 · Jātakacandrikā · p. 67)

The sign occupied by Mercury and the condition of that sign’s lord are the next layer in the reading method. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) Bṛhat Jātaka gives difficult results for Mercury in Mars’s signs and favourable ones in Venus’s and his own signs. (BJ 18.8-11) Friendship and enmity also matter in this step, since Parāśara gives the Sun as neutral, Venus and Saturn as friends, and the others as enemies to Mercury. (BPHS 2.53) Vishwanathan reads the star lord as a second layer under the sign lord, so Mercury’s results are filtered first by sign dignity and then by the nakṣatra dispositor.[PRIVATE]

Conjunction strongly alters Mercury because the classical rule makes him malefic when joined with malefics. (BJ 2.5 · SAR 4.9) The public-domain Vijnanananda translation of Bṛhajjātakam gives Mercury with the Sun as clever, intelligent, and friendly in conduct. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 233) With the Moon, it gives graceful speech and skill in money and interpretation. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 234) With Mars, it gives commercial activity and bodily vigor. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 235) With Jupiter, it gives music and skill in dance. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 236) With Venus, it gives eloquence and landed status, and with Saturn, deceit and disobedience. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 236) These are conjunction readings added in that English book from the chapter on planetary pairs. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 233 · Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 234 · Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 235 · Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 236)

In timing, Mercury gives his own portfolio most clearly in his daśā and then mixes it with the planet of the antardaśā by conjunction, aspect, lordship, and dignity. (BJ 8.15 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results · BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) A strong Mercury in daśā supports learning, writing, trade, argument, and gain through educated or friendly circles. (BJ 8.15 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) A weak or afflicted Mercury in daśā gives harsh speech, anxiety, confinement, skin trouble, and scattered effort. (BJ 8.15 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) From the Moon, transit judgment follows the same classical logic of house position and strength. The texts in this library do not say a separate transit chapter here for Mercury from the Moon.

Mercury is speech and the prince. He signifies intellect, learning, trade, writing, arithmetic, wit and adaptability. Varāhamihira describes him as the colour of dūrvā grass, clear-spoken, fond of jokes, with all three humours mixed.

Kanyā is both his exaltation sign, most deeply at 15°, and his mūlatrikoṇa. He is debilitated in Mīna and rules Mithuna and Kanyā. The Sun and Venus are his friends, and the Moon is his enemy. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are neutral. He is neuter in gender and is a benefic unless malefics are with him.

He shares directional strength in the lagna with Jupiter and is one of the kārakas of the 10th house. He is rarely more than a sign from the Sun. He is therefore often combust.

In the Vimśottarī daśā Mercury rules 17 years. The sequence is Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
