Nature

Varāhamihira gives Venus as a natural benefic, and Sārāvalī repeats that class among the benefics. (BJ 2.5 · Sārāvalī 4.9) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara place Venus among the two ministers in the planetary cabinet, and Bṛhat Jātaka assigns to it madana, desire, with Parāśara also giving vīrya, potency, among its chief significations. (BJ 2.1 · BPHS 2.4-5 · Sārāvalī 4.1 · BPHS 2.2-3) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī call Venus female and watery. (BJ 2.6 · BPHS 2.9 · Sārāvalī 4.14 · BPHS 2.10) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara place it in the brāhmaṇa varṇa, and Bṛhat Jātaka with Parāśara class it as rajas. (BJ 2.7 · BPHS 2.11 · BPHS 2.12)

Several early chapters give the physical and material correspondences of Venus. Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī assign to it a variegated colour, and Bṛhat Jātaka with Parāśara give a dark or śyāma complexion. (BJ 2.5 · BJ 2.4 · BPHS 2.6-7 · Sārāvalī 4.12) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī describe Venus as happy, handsome, fine-eyed, and dark-haired, with curling hair and a phlegm-and-wind constitution. (BJ 2.8-11 · BPHS 2.13-19 · Sārāvalī 4.21-27) Its deity is Śacī, its direction south-east, its place the bedchamber, its metal pearl, its gem diamond, its taste sour, its season vasanta, and its span of time a fortnight. (BPHS 2.8 · Sārāvalī 4.8 · BJ 2.12 · BPHS 2.22 · Sārāvalī 4.15 · Sārāvalī 4.16 · Phaladīpikā 2 · Nature of the grahas · BJ 2.14 · BPHS 2.24 · BPHS 2.35-36 · Sārāvalī 4.17 · BPHS 2.23)

Parāśara gives Venus as significator for wife, erotic pleasure, happiness, song, learning, poetry, flowers, delicacy, youth, ornaments, silver vehicles, cattle, pearls, prosperity, and poetic savor. (BPHS 8.45) The card also cites Venus for desire, spouse, love, arts, comforts, and vehicles. (BJ 2.1 · BJ 1.13 · BJ 2.10 · BJ 20.8 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas · Pulippāṇi 8) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara assign semen as Venus’s dhātu. (BJ 2.11 · BPHS 2.21) Parāśara also gives Venus among the significators of wife, and a verse on relations gives Venus for women. (BPHS 8.37 · BPHS 20.6)

For strength and dignity, Bṛhat Jātaka gives Venus exalted in Mīna with deepest exaltation at 27°, and fallen in the opposite sign Kanyā. (BJ 1.13) Parāśara gives exaltation in Mīna, debility in Kanyā, and places Venus’s own signs in Vṛṣabha and Tulā, with mūlatrikoṇa in Tulā from 0° to 15°. (BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.49-52) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī give directional strength to Venus in the 4th house, corresponding to the north. (BJ 2.19 · BPHS 2.25 · Sārāvalī 4.35) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī state that Venus is strong by day, and Bṛhat Jātaka with Sārāvalī place it third in natural strength. (BJ 2.21 · BPHS 2.26 · Sārāvalī 4.36 · Sārāvalī 4.40)

What the texts say of it

For house placement, Varāhamihira gives Venus in the ascendant as making one skilled in love and happy, in the fifth as happy, in the seventh as quarrelsome and desirous of intercourse, and in the twelfth as wealthy. (BJ 20.8) That verse adds that Venus in the remaining houses gives results like Jupiter. (BJ 20.8) Parāśara’s significator verse supports readings tied to marriage, pleasures, happiness, song, learning, poetry, ornaments, vehicles, cattle, pearls, and prosperity when Venus is strong and connected with supportive houses. (BPHS 8.45)

For sign placement, the primary dignity scheme is the first guide. Venus gains its highest state in Mīna and loses strength in Kanyā, with stable dignity in Vṛṣabha and Tulā, especially in early Tulā as mūlatrikoṇa. (BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.49-52) The texts in this library do not give a single chapter of sign-by-sign results for Venus alone. They do give the rule that dignity by exaltation, own sign, own trine, friendly sign, and own navāṁśa increases positional strength. (BJ 2.19 · BJ 1.13-14) From that rule, Venus in Mīna, Vṛṣabha, and Tulā has stronger capacity to give its marriage, pleasure, artistic, and comfort significations. (BJ 2.19 · BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.49-52 · BPHS 8.45)

For daśā, Bṛhat Jātaka gives song, love-making, delight, perfumes, gambling, food, drink, garments, women, jewels, lustre, love-apparatus, knowledge, desired friends, trade, agriculture, treasure, and wealth in Venus’s period. (BJ 8.17) The same verse adds enmity with base people and grief born of affection. (BJ 8.17) Parāśara and Phaladīpikā are cited by the card for strong Venus giving marriage, comforts, vehicles, and the arts, and for weak Venus giving excess in pleasure, trouble through partners, and reproductive or kidney ailments. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) Pulippāṇi’s Venus daśā verse also gives comforts, splendour, prosperity, and association with women and attendants. (Pulippāṇi 269)

How it combines

The classical method stated here is that a graha acts through the houses it rules and the house it occupies, with its condition shaped by dignity and by the star lord. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) For Venus, this means its results depend first on the houses owned from the lagna, then on the bhāva where it stands. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) A benefic Venus ruling auspicious houses and placed with dignity can direct its spouse, pleasure, vehicle, art, and prosperity significations into those topics. (BJ 2.5 · BJ 1.13 · BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BPHS 8.45) A difficult lordship or debility redirects the same significations toward attachment, partner-related strain, expense, or bodily trouble connected with its tissues and pleasures. (BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results)

The sign and the sign lord form the next layer in judgment. Parāśara gives Venus’s friendships with Mercury and Saturn, neutrality with Mars and Jupiter, and enmity with the Sun and Moon. (BPHS 2.55) Venus placed in signs of friends, in its own signs, or in its exalted sign has more support to produce its natural benefic results. (BJ 2.19 · BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.55) Venus in Kanyā is weakened by debility, and public-domain Sarvārthacintāmaṇi repeats Kanyā as its sign of debility. (BPHS 2.46-48 · Sarvārthacintāmaṇi · p. 42) One modern reading in this library says the star lord works as a second layer under the sign lord, and that comes from Vishwanathan’s method note here. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords)

Bṛhat Jātaka’s asterism results show the nakṣatra link. In Venus’s own asterism, and in its own place in that passage, strength, wealth, honour, renown, and fearlessness are given. (BJ 18.14-16) That passage is not a full doctrine for every chart, but it shows that the star lord conditions how a graha gives its results. (BJ 18.14-16) The same method line in this library states that a graha acts through its star’s lord, so Venus in a benefic star or under a strong star lord gains support, and under an afflicted star lord it gives mixed outcomes in its periods. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14)

Combination with other grahas is read from conjunction and aspect along with daśā and transit timing. Public-domain Vijnanananda’s English Bṛhajjātakam gives Sun with Venus as wealth through combat or weapons. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 233) It gives Moon with Venus as skill in weaving, dyeing, and cloth trade. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 234) It gives Mars with Venus as cleverness mixed with gambling, cheating, and illicit desire, Mercury with Venus as eloquence and leadership, and Jupiter with Venus as learning, wife, and wealth. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 235 · Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 236) In Venus daśā and its antardaśās, these joined or aspecting grahas modify the promised pleasures, marriage, art, trade, and wealth, or the grief and conflict tied to attachment. (BJ 8.17 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) The texts in this library do not say a separate transit doctrine for Venus from the Moon in the material provided here.

Venus is desire and the second minister. She signifies love, marriage, beauty, art, music, comfort, vehicles and luxury. Varāhamihira describes her as good-looking and fond of pleasure, with dark curly hair, large eyes, and a windy and phlegmatic temperament.

She is exalted in Mīna, most deeply at 27°, and debilitated in Kanyā. She rules Vṛṣabha and Tulā, and Tulā is her mūlatrikoṇa. Mercury and Saturn are her friends, and the Sun and Moon are her enemies. Mars and Jupiter are neutral.

She is a natural benefic and the kāraka of the spouse and the 7th house. She gains directional strength in the 4th. In myth she is the teacher of the asuras and Jupiter the teacher of the devas, and the texts make the two natural enemies.

In the Vimśottarī daśā Venus rules 20 years. The sequence is Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
