Nature

Varāhamihira gives Saturn as the servant in the planetary cabinet and as the significator of sorrow, and Parāśara also gives sorrow to Saturn. (BJ 2.1 · BPHS 2.4-5) Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī class Saturn among the natural malefics. (BJ 2.5 · Sārāvalī 4.9 · SAR 4.9) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī call Saturn neuter. (BJ 2.6 · BPHS 2.9 · Sārāvalī 4.14) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara assign Saturn to the wind element, and Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara place him in tamas. (BJ 2.6 · BPHS 2.10 · BJ 2.7 · BPHS 2.12) Bṛhat Jātaka gives Saturn as antyaja, and Parāśara gives him as śūdra. (BJ 2.7 · BPHS 2.11)

Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī give Saturn the black colour, and Bṛhat Jātaka gives Brahmā as the presiding deity and the west as his direction. (BJ 2.5 · Sārāvalī 4.12 · Sārāvalī 4.8) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara assign sinew to Saturn among the bodily tissues, and Parāśara also makes Saturn a significator of lifespan, servants, obstacles, hair, wandering, and wind disorders. (BJ 2.11 · BPHS 2.21 · BPHS 8.46) Parāśara gives the feet and the side to Saturn, and in Kālapuruṣa the facts in this library connect Saturn with sorrow. (BPHS 14.18 · BJ 2.1 · Sārāvalī 4.1 · BPHS 2.2-3) Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara describe Saturn as windy in humour, lean, long-bodied, tawny-eyed, large-toothed, coarse-haired, slow, and idle. (BJ 2.11 · BJ 2.8-11 · BPHS 2.13-19 · Sārāvalī 4.21-27)

The texts give further correspondences that sharpen Saturn’s nature. Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī connect him with a refuse heap, iron, the astringent taste, the cold season of śiśira, and the span of a year. (BJ 2.12 · BPHS 2.22 · Sārāvalī 4.15 · Sārāvalī 4.16 · BJ 2.14 · BPHS 2.24 · BPHS 2.35-36 · Sārāvalī 4.17 · BPHS 2.23) Sārāvalī gives old age to Saturn, and Sūrya Siddhānta gives Saturday as his day. (Sārāvalī 4.27 · Sūrya Siddhānta 12.78) Phaladīpikā gives nīla, blue sapphire, as Saturn’s gem. (Phaladīpikā 2 · Nature of the grahas) Sārāvalī also gives names such as Manda, Koṇa, Yama, and Kṛṣṇa for Saturn. (SAR 4.11)

Varāhamihira and Parāśara give Saturn’s exaltation in Tulā and debility in Meṣa, with deepest exaltation at 20°, and Parāśara gives Makara and Kumbha as his own signs with mūlatrikoṇa in Kumbha 0°-20°. (BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.49-52) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī give Saturn directional strength in the west, which in house reckoning is the 7th. (BJ 2.19 · BPHS 2.25 · Sārāvalī 4.35) Bṛhat Jātaka, Parāśara, and Sārāvalī give him strength at night. (BJ 2.21 · BPHS 2.26 · Sārāvalī 4.36) Bṛhat Jātaka and Sārāvalī place Saturn last in natural strength among the seven visible grahas. (BJ 2.21 · Sārāvalī 4.40)

What the texts say of it

Bṛhat Jātaka gives sign results for Saturn. In Meṣa he gives folly, wandering, deceit, and lack of friends, and in Vṛścika he gives bondage, beating, fickleness, and pitiless conduct. (BJ 18.17-19) In Karka he gives want of comforts, dental trouble, and loss connected with mother and sons, and in Siṁha he gives ignobility, hard labour, and lack of comforts and sons. (BJ 18.17-19) In Dhanus he gives want of comfort, wealth, and sons, with stumbling in writing. (BJ 18.17-19) In Makara he gives command under authority, and in Tulā, his exaltation, he gives fame, honour from troop, town, army, and village, with wealth. (BJ 18.17-19)

Bṛhat Jātaka adds an important condition for Saturn in the ascendant. It gives hidden aims, sickness, lust, filth, pain in childhood, and sluggish speech for Saturn in the 1st. (BJ 20.9) The same verse says that if Saturn in the ascendant is in Jupiter’s sign, his own sign, or exaltation, the native may be like a king, lord of a village or town, very learned, and handsome. (BJ 20.9) The passage connects the placement with dignity. Saturn in a difficult place gives one set of results, while the same planet fortified by sign gives office, endurance, and status. (BJ 20.9 · BJ 1.13)

For Saturn’s daśā, Bṛhat Jātaka gives donkeys, camels, birds, buffaloes, old companions or women, authority over guilds, villages, or towns, and coarse grain. (BJ 8.18) The same verse gives phlegm and wind troubles, envy, anger, delusion, foulness, misfortune, torpor, fatigue, deformity, and rebuke from servants, children, and wife. (BJ 8.18) Parāśara’s daśā chapter and Phaladīpikā support the rule that Saturn strong by sign and condition gives steady work, authority, and durable gains, and weak Saturn gives delay, chronic disease, poverty, and grief. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results)

How it combines

Parāśara gives results from house lordship, and the method stated in this library judges Saturn through the houses he rules and the house he occupies. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) For any lagna, Saturn carries the topics of Makara and Kumbha into the bhāva where he stands. (BPHS 2.49-52 · BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) His sign dignity modifies how he gives those results. Exalted Saturn in Tulā, or own-sign Saturn in Makara or Kumbha, has more capacity to give station, endurance, and organized responsibility, and debilitated Saturn in Meṣa has less capacity and more strain, delay, and sorrow. (BJ 1.13 · BPHS 2.46-48 · BPHS 2.49-52 · BJ 2.1 · BPHS 2.4-5)

Parāśara gives Saturn’s permanent relations as friendship with Mercury and Venus, equality with Jupiter, and enmity with the Sun, Moon, and Mars. (BPHS 2.56) These relations matter through Saturn’s relation with the lord of the sign in which he stands, so Saturn in the signs of friends tends to work with more support, and Saturn in the signs of enemies tends to work with more friction. (BPHS 2.56) Bṛhat Jātaka’s ascendant verse shows the same principle by giving high results for Saturn in Jupiter’s sign, his own sign, or exaltation. (BJ 20.9) The method also applies to conjunctions and aspects, because a malefic Saturn joined to hostile or damaged lords can burden the houses involved. (BJ 2.5 · SAR 4.9 · BPHS 26.54)

The stated method in this library also judges a graha through its nakṣatra lord, and this rule is classical in the cited methods. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) Saturn placed in a nakṣatra links his results to that star lord’s house rulership, condition, and strength. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) Vishwanathan reads the star lord as a second layer under the sign lord, so Saturn’s own agenda of delay, labour, service, and longevity is filtered first by rāśi dignity and then by nakṣatra control. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) The cited passages give this as a method of judgment. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14)

For conjunctions, the older English renderings of Bṛhajjātaka add some concrete pairings. Vijnanananda’s public-domain translation gives Sun with Saturn as skill in metal and earthen works. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 233) The same book gives Moon with Saturn as birth from a complicated maternal situation. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 234) It gives Mars with Saturn as grief, misery, falsehood, and reproach, and Mercury with Saturn as cheating and disobedience. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 235 · Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 236) It also gives Jupiter with Saturn as work such as barber, potter, or cook. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 14 · p. 236) In transit from the Moon, the texts in this library do not say more here. In daśā and antardaśā, Saturn gives his own significations most strongly when his house lordship, sign dignity, and star lord are all supportive. Saturn is sorrow and the servant. He signifies time, discipline, labour, delay, longevity, the old and the poor, and detachment. Varāhamihira describes him as tall, lean, dark and lazy, with tawny eyes, coarse hair and nails, and a windy temperament.

He is exalted in Tulā, most deeply at 20°, and debilitated in Meṣa. He rules Makara and Kumbha, and Kumbha is his mūlatrikoṇa. Mercury and Venus are his friends, and the Sun, Moon and Mars are his enemies. Jupiter is neutral. Besides the 7th, he fully aspects the 3rd and 10th houses from himself.

He is the slowest of the visible grahas and spends about two and a half years in each sign. His passage over the natal Moon is sāḍe sātī. He is the kāraka of longevity in the 8th and gains directional strength in the 7th.

In the Vimśottarī daśā Saturn rules 19 years. The sequence is Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
