Rahu
The nine grahas

Rāhu is the Moon's ascending node, called tamas, the asura who swallows the Sun and Moon in eclipses. He signifies foreign things, craving and sudden events. The texts do not agree on his exaltation or his signs, so this app gives him none.

Nature

Parāśara gives Rāhu as of cāṇḍāla birth and places him with Ketu and Saturn in the anthill, a detail used for his locale and class symbolism. (BPHS 2.31) Bṛhat Jātaka counts him among the malefics under the name Phanin, and its list places him after Saturn among the harmful grahas. (BPHS 26.54) Bṛhat Jātaka gives him the name Tamas, and the reference card, from Bṛhat Jātaka and Parāśara, identifies him with the ascending node that causes eclipses. (BJ 2.3 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas) Parāśara describes him as smoke-shaped, dark blue or black-bodied, fearsome, forest-dwelling, intelligent, and of windy humour. (BPHS 2.20)

The directional texts give Rāhu the south-west. (BJ 2.5 · Sārāvalī 4.8) Parāśara gives the body parts he signifies as the face, navel, soles, head, eyes, ears, nose, and cheeks. (BPHS 14.19) Another Parāśara passage adds travel, time, serpents, night, brilliance, and gambling to his significations. (BPHS 8.47) The reference card also includes foreign things, obsession, sudden events, poison, and eclipse under Rāhu. (BJ 2.3 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas) Phaladīpikā gives gomeda, hessonite, as his gem, and Parāśara gives lead among his material correspondences. (BPHS 2.32 · Phaladīpikā 2 · Nature of the grahas)

For rank in the planetary cabinet, Parāśara names the Sun and Moon as kings, Mars as commander, Mercury as prince, and Jupiter and Venus as ministers. (BPHS 2.5) The reference card places Rāhu as the army. (BPHS 2.5) The texts in this library do not give a sex for Rāhu or an element in the standard five-element format. Pulippāṇi groups the serpent with Sun and Mars in pitta nāḍi, but Parāśara’s graha nature passage gives him a windy constitution. (Pulippāṇi 176 · BPHS 2.20)

For dignity, the reference card says that the texts do not agree on Rāhu’s exaltation or signs, so this entry assigns no settled exaltation, debility, mūlatrikona, or ownership. (BJ 2.3 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas) Pulippāṇi gives Aquarius as rulership, Scorpio and Cancer as exaltation, Taurus as debility, and Leo as enmity. (Pulippāṇi 10) This is one later scheme, and the library does not present it as a shared rule across all sources. (Pulippāṇi 10) Laghu Pārāśarī gives a different kind of rule. Rāhu gives the results of the house he occupies and of the lord he joins, and when he is strong in a kendra or trikoṇa and joined with the lord of the other, he becomes a yoga-producer. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13 · Laghu Pārāśarī 3.21)

What the texts say of it

Laghu Pārāśarī gives the main interpretive rule for Rāhu in signs and houses. He produces the results of the bhāva he occupies and of the sign-lord with whom he is joined. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13) His results are therefore highly dependent on the bhāva and on the planet that disposits or conjoins him. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13 · BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) If he is strong in a kendra or trikoṇa and is associated with a kendra or trikoṇa lord, the text gives him as capable of producing rāja yoga. (Laghu Pārāśarī 3.21) The method stated in this library adds that grahas act through the houses they rule and occupy, and through their sign dignity and star lord. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14)

For house placements, the public-domain English Self Instructor gives concise results. In the upacayas, it treats Rāhu in the 3rd and 6th as materially forceful, with boldness, wealth, conquest of enemies, and fearlessness, along with rougher traits and illness in some cases. (Self Instructor 5 · p. 129 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 130) In the 4th and 5th, it gives breaks in education, foreign languages, domestic irregularity, trouble from authorities, and loss of children. (Self Instructor 5 · p. 129 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 129) In the 1st and 2nd, it gives courage, little wealth, sight trouble, harsh temper, and family strain, and it states that some signs lessen harm in the 1st. (Self Instructor 5 · p. 129 · Self Instructor 5 · p. 129)

The same English book treats the 7th as difficult for marriage and bodily health, with two wives, disease, and sensual excess. (Self Instructor 5 · p. 130) Another passage there gives danger to lifespan when Rāhu is in the 7th and afflicted by Mars and other malefics. (Self Instructor 3 · p. 106) Its combinations with luminaries are harsh. Moon with Rāhu in the birth sign, with Mars and Ketu in trines, is read there as spirit affliction. (Self Instructor 4 · p. 118) Sun with Rāhu in the ascendant, with Mars and Ketu in trines, is read there as blindness. (Self Instructor 4 · p. 118) These readings come from Suryanarain Row’s public-domain English Self Instructor, and they stand here as English book readings outside the Sanskrit verse set cited elsewhere. (Self Instructor 3 · p. 106 · Self Instructor 4 · p. 118 · Self Instructor 4 · p. 118)

Parāśara’s daśā chapter and Phaladīpikā give Rāhu’s period as changeful and sharp in effect. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) The reference card summarizes those passages as sudden turns, foreign contacts, unconventional gains, fears, deception, and illness. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) It also states that the daśā follows the lord of the sign he occupies and the grahas he joins. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) Strong Rāhu is read there as giving quick rise, influence, and success by unusual channels. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) Weak Rāhu is read there as giving confusion, scandal, poison, and fear. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results)

How it combines

The first rule for combining Rāhu comes from Laghu Pārāśarī. Rāhu gives the results of the bhāva he occupies and of the lord he is joined with. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13) In practice, house results come first, and the condition of the associated lord shapes how those results turn out. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13 · BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) If Rāhu is in a kendra or trikoṇa and is joined to a kendra or trikoṇa lord, Laghu Pārāśarī gives yoga-producing power, especially when strength is present. (Laghu Pārāśarī 3.21) This is the closest classical equivalent to house lordship for Rāhu in the present sources, since no settled ownership is accepted in the reference card. (Laghu Pārāśarī 3.21 · BJ 2.3 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas)

The method line states that a graha acts through the house it occupies, the houses it rules, its dignity in sign, and its star lord. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14) For Rāhu, the texts here support the occupied house and the sign-lord as the firm classical base. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13 · BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords) Since the library does not assign him agreed signs or exaltation, sign dignity is read through the sign he inhabits and the condition of that sign’s ruler. (BJ 2.3 · BPHS 2 · Nature of the grahas) A modern reading method says the star lord forms another layer under the sign lord, and Vishwanathan presents that layer explicitly for judging how Rāhu delivers his results. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords)

Conjunctions matter greatly for Rāhu because the sources make him derivative in expression. (Laghu Pārāśarī 2.13 · BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) Joined with a strong kendra or trikoṇa lord in those places, he can support status and rise. (Laghu Pārāśarī 3.21) Joined with afflicting malefics or tied to damaged luminaries, harsher effects become more likely, as the English combinations on Sun with Rāhu, Moon with Rāhu, and the afflicted 7th indicate. (Self Instructor 3 · p. 106 · Self Instructor 4 · p. 118 · Self Instructor 4 · p. 118) Parāśara’s bodily significations also help specify the area affected in such combinations, especially head, face, eyes, nose, ears, and soles. (BPHS 14.19)

In daśā and antardaśā, the reference card follows Parāśara and Phaladīpikā in giving Rāhu sudden turns, foreign ties, irregular gains, fear, deceit, and illness. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) The same sources make his results depend on the sign-lord and planets joined to him, so subperiods of those grahas tend to open the channels through which Rāhu acts. (BPHS 36 · Effects of the daśās · Phaladīpikā 19 · Daśā results) For transit, the texts in this library do not say a separate rule here for Rāhu from the Moon. The safest reading from the present methods is to judge the transit by the Moon-based house occupied, the sign-lord involved, and any contact with natal grahas and relevant daśā lords. (BPHS 14 · Effects of the bhāva lords · BJ 1.13-14)

Rāhu is the Moon’s ascending node, where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s going north. Eclipses happen near the nodes. The Bṛhat Jātaka lists Rāhu and Ketu among the grahas but gives Rāhu no form, dignity or aspect. Later texts treat him like Saturn, as a malefic who signifies foreign things, obsession, the unconventional and sudden change.

He always moves backwards through the signs, about a year and a half in each, and is always exactly opposite Ketu. Traditions disagree on his exaltation sign, Vṛṣabha or Mithuna. This app uses his mean position.

His Vimśottarī daśā lasts 18 years. The texts judge him by the sign he is in and that sign’s lord, whose results he gives.

In the Vimśottarī daśā Rahu rules 18 years. The sequence is Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rāhu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
