Kumbha is the eleventh sign of the sidereal zodiac, extending 30° from 300°, and its lord is Saturn according to Parāśara and Varāhamihira. (BPHS 3.1 · BPHS 3.21-22 · BJ 1.6) Parāśara and Varāhamihira class it as fixed, male, and cruel, and as an odd sign it belongs to the male group. (BJ 1.11 · BPHS 3.5) Parāśara gives it as an airy sign, with the three humours mixed, and assigns it the śūdra varṇa. (BPHS 3.6 · BPHS 3.21-22) Varāhamihira assigns it to the western direction. (BJ 1.11)
Varāhamihira says Kumbha is śīrṣodaya, rising by the head, and that it is strong by day. (BJ 1.10) In the body of Kālapuruṣa, Varāhamihira and Parāśara assign Kumbha to the shanks. (BJ 1.4 · BPHS 3.4) Bṛhat Jātaka gives the sign-form as a pot, and Parāśara expands the image to a man with a pot, tawny or dark, of middle build, standing in water. (BJ 1.5 · BPHS 3.21-22) Varāhamihira gives its colour as brown. (BJ 1.20)
The dignity scheme given by Varāhamihira and Parāśara assigns no exaltation and no debility to Kumbha for any graha. (BJ 1.13-14 · BPHS 2.46-52) Parāśara gives Saturn’s mūlatrikoṇa as the first 20° of Kumbha, with the remaining part functioning as Saturn’s own sign. (BPHS 2.46-52 · BPHS 2.52) A graha placed in Kumbha is therefore judged by Saturn’s ownership, by whether it occupies Saturn’s mūlatrikoṇa portion, and by its natural relation to Saturn. (BJ 1.13-14 · BPHS 2.46-52 · BJ 2.16-17 · BPHS 2.53-56)
For that relation, Varāhamihira and Parāśara give Mercury and Venus as Saturn’s friends, Jupiter as neutral, and the Sun, Moon, and Mars as enemies. (BJ 2.16-17 · BPHS 2.53-56) A graha in a friend’s sign gains support, one in a neutral’s sign is middling, and one in an enemy’s sign is weakened by residence. (BJ 2.16-17 · BPHS 2.53-56 · Sārāvalī 4.28-29) Kumbha contains parts of Dhaniṣṭhā, Śatabhiṣaj, and Pūrvabhādrapadā within its 30° span. (BJ 1.4)
In Bṛhat Jātaka, Varāhamihira says one born with the Moon in Kumbha has a camel-like neck, visible veins, a long rough hairy body, and broad feet, thighs, back, buttocks, face, and waist. (BJ 17.11) He adds attachment to others’ wives, others’ wealth, and sinful acts, alternating loss and gain, fondness for flowers, unguents, and friends, and endurance in travel. (BJ 17.11) Vijnanananda’s public-domain English rendering reads jaratha here as harsh with age or aged in manner, and keeps the same broad picture of bodily roughness and alternating fortunes. (Bṛhajjātakam, Vijnanananda 16 · p. 259)
Sārāvalī gives a sterner account of the Moon in Kumbha. (SAR 23.72) It says the native may be poor yet arrogant, rough-bodied, broad-handed and broad-footed, attached to liquor, hated by the good, devoid of righteousness, and marked by deceit, laziness, skill, learning, bad conduct, and suffering. (SAR 23.72) The same chapter modifies the result by aspect to the Moon in Kumbha. (SAR 23.73 · SAR 23.74 · SAR 23.75 · SAR 23.76 · SAR 23.77 · SAR 23.78) The Sun’s aspect gives bravery, a kingly appearance, righteousness, and agriculture. (SAR 23.73) Mars gives truth in speech, loss connected with mother, teacher, and wealth, laziness, and involvement in others’ affairs. (SAR 23.74) Mercury gives skill in sexual service, song, female affection, bodily prosperity, and pleasure. (SAR 23.75) Jupiter gives wealth, nobility, virtue, and connection with villages, fields, trees, houses, and women. (SAR 23.76) Venus gives timidity, censure, sinful attachment, and little happiness. (SAR 23.77) Saturn gives dirtiness, deceit, attachment to others’ wives, immovable property, and wealth. (SAR 23.78)
For Kumbha rising as lagna, Sārāvalī gives a difficult delineation. (SAR 47.42 · SAR 47.43 · SAR 47.44 · SAR 47.45) It says the native does low work, surpasses the family, is foolish, angry, lazy, attached to enmity, harshness, gambling, low company, and female servants, and may be deprived of relatives. (SAR 47.42 · SAR 47.43) It also gives pettiness, slander, poverty, lack of esteem, decline of prosperity, and yet acquisition of wealth and attachment to prosperity. (SAR 47.43 · SAR 47.44) The texts in this library do not give a separate Varāhamihira verse on Kumbha as lagna. (SAR 47.42 · SAR 47.43 · SAR 47.44 · SAR 47.45)
For grahas placed in Kumbha, Bṛhat Jātaka says the Sun there makes one base, fallen from sons and fortune, and without property. (BJ 18.4) Sārāvalī adds misery, little wealth, deceit, broken friendship, impure appearance, slander, bad speech, gathering of friends, happiness through women, wisdom, conquest of enemies, and increase of wealth and fame. (SAR 22.65 · SAR 22.66) Sārāvalī says Jupiter in Kumbha can give greed, disease, loss of wealth by speech, and pursuit of women, yet another verse gives Vedic and śāstric understanding, honour from friends and the good, leadership, wealth, pride, and firmness. (SAR 27.22 · SAR 27.23) Jupiter in Kumbha aspected by Saturn is said to make a renowned and honourable noble fighter. (SAR 27.63) Sārāvalī says Venus in Kumbha may give filth and loss of enjoyments, or courtesy, generosity, wealth, fame, and royal favour. (SAR 28.22 · SAR 28.23) Saturn in Kumbha may give harsh speech, effortful action, interest in another’s wife, sacrifice, crafts, knowledge, tranquillity, wealth, policy, and testing of jewels. (SAR 29.22 · SAR 29.23)
In chart reading, the classical method here is to judge any graha in Kumbha as Saturn’s guest. (BJ 1.13-14 · BPHS 2.46-52 · BJ 2.16-17 · BPHS 2.53-56 · Sārāvalī 4.28-29) Mercury and Venus do better by sign friendship, Jupiter is moderate, and the Sun, Moon, and Mars are strained by Saturn’s enmity toward them. (BJ 2.16-17 · BPHS 2.53-56) A benefic here can still give Saturnian colouring such as restraint, endurance, social distance, labour, or work with systems, because the sign-lord frames the result. (BPHS 3.21-22 · BJ 1.6 · BJ 2.16-17 · BPHS 2.53-56) A malefic here gains the stability of a fixed airy sign and may act with persistence, but its result still depends on dignity, house placement, and aspect. (BJ 1.11 · BPHS 3.5 · BPHS 3.6 · BJ 1.13-14 · BPHS 2.46-52)
The house represented by Kumbha is judged by the whole-sign house method given in Bṛhat Jātaka. (BJ 1.15-16 · BJ 1.17-18) If Kumbha falls as a house, its topics fare through Saturn, so Saturn’s house placement, sign, strength, and dignity show the condition of that house. (BJ 1.15-16 · BJ 1.17-18 · BJ 1.13-14 · BPHS 2.46-52) If Saturn is in Kumbha, the house gains the support of its own lord, and the first 20° add mūlatrikoṇa strength. (BPHS 2.46-52 · BPHS 2.52) If Saturn is afflicted or badly placed, the house suffers even when Kumbha as a sign is stable and day-strong. (BJ 1.10 · BJ 1.15-16 · BJ 1.17-18) Vishwanathan reads the star lord as a second layer under the sign lord, which can refine results within Dhaniṣṭhā, Śatabhiṣaj, and Pūrvabhādrapadā. (BJ 1.4)
As the lagna, Kumbha makes Saturn the ruler of the body and life course, so Saturn’s state becomes central to health, station, and conduct. (BJ 1.15-16 · BJ 1.17-18 · SAR 47.42 · SAR 47.43 · SAR 47.44) As the Moon’s sign, Kumbha becomes the janma rāśi for transit reckoning, and gochara is then counted from Kumbha according to the transit chapter of Phaladīpikā. (Phaladīpikā 26 · Gochara (transits), 26.2 and 26.24) Saturn’s passage through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from the Moon sign constitutes sāḍe sātī. (Phaladīpikā 26 · Gochara (transits), 26.2 and 26.24) If the natal Moon is in Kumbha, those three signs are Makara, Kumbha, and Mīna. (Phaladīpikā 26 · Gochara (transits), 26.2 and 26.24)
In Jaimini’s Chara daśā, each sign has its own period counted from the lagna, so Kumbha may operate as a daśā sign when its turn arises. (BPHS 50 · Jaimini Sūtras 1.1.28) During a Kumbha daśā, results are read from the sign, its lord Saturn, the grahas placed in it, and the houses counted from it by the Chara daśā method. (BPHS 50 · Jaimini Sūtras 1.1.28) Parāśara also gives the special sign aspects, and Kumbha is said to aspect Aries, Cancer, and Libra. (BPHS 4.12) That rule adds another layer when Kumbha is activated by daśā or by strong occupation, because the signs it aspects become tied to its outcomes. (BPHS 4.12)
